Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ has broken $500 million… so far.
Although ‘Doctor Strange’ has long been thought of as one of Marvel’s more obscure superhero properties, it looks as though Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme is making a killing.
According to Box Office Mojo, ‘Doctor Strange’ has earned a whopping $500 million at the global box office, with an impressive $159.3 million US domestic. Not bad for a comic book character who had seemingly fallen into obscurity.
So how does ‘Doctor Strange’ stack up against other Marvel movies?
Well, it reached the $150 million mark at the US box office faster than most other Marvel solo movies, second only to the original ‘Iron Man’ film. And it managed equally impressive stats at the global box office, too. The $341 million it’s made so far has easily surpassed the likes of ‘Thor’, ‘Iron Man’ and even ‘Ant-Man’.
Does this bode well for the good doctor?
Well, it looks as though ‘Doctor Strange’ is on course to make a HUGE impression on Marvel fans… and if it continues to rake in the cash, it could beat out the likes of ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Ant-Man’ by the end of its box office run.
It’s extremely unlikely that we’ll see it approach ‘Iron Man 3’ figures, but this impressive start could position Dr Stephen Strange as the next big Marvel hit. And you never know, he could even find himself taking on an even bigger role in upcoming ‘Avengers’ movies.
Will it be the start of a new, billion-dollar franchise?
For now, we have to wait and see.
‘Doctor Strange’ stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, alongside Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen and Benedict Wong.
Scott Derrickson directed the film based on a script he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill.
‘Doctor Strange’ opened in cinemas on 25 October 2016.
