Does Batman v Superman’s New Trailer Hint At Darkseid In Justice League?

The big talking point from this morning’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ trailer has been Doomsday, revealed in the final few shots as the big bad of next year’s blockbuster.

However, the trailer also subtly hints at the inclusion of another villain, who may prove to be the main antagonist when the Justice League forms in 2017.

At the trailer’s two minute mark we see Ben Affleck’s Batman being wrestled to the ground by masked soldiers in a desert location (screen-grabbed below). This scene is widely believed to be a dream sequence enforcing the Dark Knight’s concerns about Henry Cavill’s Superman.

In the background of that shot we see strange flying creatures tearing through the sky, some with soldiers in their grasp. Fans online have been quick to point out that these creatures could be parademons.

Parademons are described on the DC Comics Wikia as “the personal shock troops of Darkseid of Apokolips” which “are genetically created in Apokolips’ laboratories and serve as his loyal army.”

Darkseid is a popular villain in the DC Comics universe who is among the favourites to clash with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League when they assemble in Zack Snyder’s 2017 film.

The parademons apparent inclusion in 'Dawn of Justice’ doesn’t mean Darkseid will appear himself however. They may simply serve as a reference to the villain, planting the seeds for his eventual appearance.

Them showing up in a dream sequence furthers this theory. Dream sequences are the perfect place for a hefty dose of foreshadowing - as seen in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ earlier this year.

'Batman v Superman’ will, obviously, focus on the fight between the two superhero icons, but as the trailer reveals, they will eventually put their differences aside to fight a greater threat.

As we see it’s Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman who saves the pair when Doomsday strikes. This three, known as the Trinity of superheroes, will form the backbone of the league - who will be joined by Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s Flash, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, and the as-of-yet uncast Green Lantern, among others.

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ will be released on 25 March 2016. 'Justice League: Part One’ is set for release on 17 November 2017.
