Donnie Darko director wants to make a sequel
‘Donnie Darko’ director Richard Kelly wants to make a sequel.
During an interview with HMV, ‘Donnie Darko’ director Richard Kelly revealed that he’d love to make a sequel to his 2001 cult classic… just don’t talk about the other one.
“I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe,” he said. “It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything.”

“Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place,” he added. “I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”
Of course, there already is a sequel to ‘Donnie Darko’.
‘S. Darko’ was released in 2009 – 8 years after the original film appeared in cinemas. It followed the story of Samantha Darko – Donnie’s younger sister from the original movie. Now a teenager, she begins to experience similar visions to Donnie. But with a muddled storyline and rather contrived characters, it failed to impress fans and critics alike.
And original director Richard Kelly had nothing to do with it.
“To set the record straight, here’s a few facts I’d like to share with you all – I haven’t read this script,” he told /Film. “I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever be involved,” writes Kelly. “I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stand to make any money from this film.”
And let’s face it – it really isn’t much good.
So is it time ‘Donnie Darko’ got a real sequel?
I can’t help thinking there’s a lot of story left to tell in the ‘Donnie Darko’ universe. And with Richard Kelly on board, it could be the sequel we were always hoping for.
But for now, we have to wait and see.
