Fantastic Beasts’ Queenie Has Previously Unseen Magical Ability
‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ is set to open up a whole new dimension to the Harry Potterverse – and part of this will be showcasing magical abilities hitherto unseen within JK Rowling’s iconic story world.
One key figure who will boast new abilities (well, technically old abilities, given it’s a Potter prequel) is Queenie Goldstein, played by actress and musician Alison Sudol (recently seen in Amazon’s ‘Transparent’) in the upcoming movie from ‘Harry Potter’ 5 to 8 director David Yates.
Sudol, who stars alongside Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander as a desk clerk in the US Magical Congress, tells Entertainment Weekly that Queenie is a Legimen; in muggle (or, er, ‘no-maj’) terms, this essentially means mind-reader.
However, where previous practitioners of legimency, notably Salazar Slytherin, used it as a form of attack (which Snape instructs Harry to defend himself against in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’), for Queenie it behaves in a different way.
Sudol says Queenie is “basically a complete and utter magical empath. She’s able to read people - so it’s not just reading somebody’s thoughts. She’s can read into someone’s story, she can see people’s goals.
“And so even though she’s able to do magic with her wand, a lot of her magic is actually internal, which makes her a different type of wizard or witch.
“And she’s incredibly fun, playful, joyful, and free-spirited, kind and wise, and also has a sort of stillness about her because she’s always tuning into people, so she’s quite an interesting character to play - very vivacious and lively, yet very centred and aware.”
We can surely expect to learn more about the new characters we’ll meet (and the powers they’ll display) in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ before the film opens on 18 November.
