It’s official – ‘Fast and Furious 8’ has earned $1 billion.

According to Box Office Mojo, the latest ‘Fast and Furious’ movie has toppled a major box office milestone this weekend, reaching $1 billion worldwide.

“With an estimated $19.3 million, Fate of the Furious sees its domestic cume grow to $192.7 million, earning a third weekend atop the domestic box office,” they revealed. “Of course, the bigger story is the film became Universal’s fifth title to top $1 billion worldwide, joining the ranks of Jurassic World ($1.67 billion), Furious 7 ($1.52 billion), Minions ($1.16 billion) and Jurassic Park ($1.04 billion)”

Apparently, ‘Fast 8’ – known in other regions as ‘Fate of the Furious’ – earned a whopping $68.4 million from 69 markets this weekend alone, bringing its international total to $867.6 million. Combined with the $192.7 million domestic so far, ‘Fast 8’ has earned its place in the billion-dollar club.

A current total of $1,060,321,355 to be exact.

Obviously, this is a huge sum and the folks at Universal will no doubt be pleased. And the best bit? This places ‘Fast and Furious 8’ as the 21st highest-grossing movie of all time, just shy of the Top 20… and with another good weekend, we might see it creep up the rankings.

But it’s still not a patch on ‘Furious 7’.

Earning a whopping $1.5 billion, ‘Furious 7’ is still the highest-grossing ‘Fast and Furious’ film to date… and it’s unlikely that ‘Fast 8’ will be able to catch up at this stage. Still, it’s a staggering performance and an excellent haul for the studio.

And it could still creep a little higher in the coming weeks.

‘Fast and Furious 8’ stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Scott Eastwood, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell and Helen Mirren.

F. Gary Gray directed the film based on a script by Chris Morgan.

‘Fast and Furious 8’ heads to cinemas on 12 April 2017.
