Serena Williams isn’t the only super-mother out there performing jaw-dropping physical feats with a bun in the oven.

‘Wonder Woman’ actress Gal Gadot has revealed that she shot action sequences for the upcoming Warner Bros/DC movie whilst five months pregnant.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the 31-year old actress recalls returning to the set of the Patty Jenkins-directed superheroine movie in November of 2016. While she had been pregnant when production began, her baby bump had now grown too large to be concealed by simple means.

As a result, a green cloth was placed over Gadot’s tummy to allow it to be digitally removed in post-production, which seemed to have amused the actress: “On close-up I looked very much like Wonder Woman… On wide shots I looked very funny, like Wonder Woman pregnant with Kermit the Frog.”

Well, as digital manipulation of an actress’s body goes, this instance seems considerably easier to justify than the slimming down of Cara Delevingne in ‘Suicide Squad.’

Director Jenkins praises her leading lady’s efforts: “She’s pregnant during part of the movie, in a suit out in a field in the freezing cold in others. There are so many things we asked her to do: Now do it on one foot. Now shout while you’re doing it. Now it’s raining in the freezing cold and you’ve lost your voice, go. Everyday it was a hilarious gauntlet and she would do it.

“Now, at least, we will be able to tell her daughter Maya that she’s in her mom’s stomach right then, in the middle of that battle scene.”

Producer Chuck Roven was also impressed by Gadot’s diligence whilst pregnant: “She couldn’t do a huge amount of physical activity but she was being aggressive. She still had to be fierce. That was special. I’ve been doing this for awhile but I’ve never that had that experience before.”

Quite appropriate, really, for the first female-fronted superhero solo movie of the era to showcase genuine female power in this way.

Gadot’s second child Maya was born on 20 March 2017; her first daughter Alma was born in November 2011, not long after her mother hit the big time in ‘Fast Five.’

‘Wonder Woman’ opens in UK cinemas on 2 June. Gadot will then reprise the role in ‘Justice League,’ opening 17 November.
