The Kingsmen are back in ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’, but that’s not all we find in the new trailer.
‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ sees the return of Eggsy (Taron Egerton) – the chav-turned-super-spy who suited up to save the world in the first movie. But with the death of his mentor Harry (Colin Firth) it looks as though it’s all change for the Kingsman organisation.
As for the new trailer, there’s fast cars, spy gadgets and even the odd villain to be seen.
So what did we learn?
Actually, quite a lot.
London cabs get an upgrade
It looks as though the Kingsmen get a very different taxi service to the rest of us, as Eggsy hitches a ride in a submersible London cab. And it’s clearly an homage to the underwater Lotus Esprit from the Bond movie, ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. “I thought that was really cool,” said director Matthew Vaughn during an interview with Empire Magazine. “But it’s unattainable. Wouldn’t it be cool having a car that everyone’s been in doing it? I thought it would be fun to say, ‘let’s see a taxi do shit I’ve never seen.”
A new Kingsman leader
After the events of the first movie, there’s a new head of Kingsman in town. Introducing Michael Gambon – taking over from Michael Caine as the new Arthur. “He came in, did one day with us,” said Matthew Vaughn. Doesn’t sound like a lot of time to get into character, does it? Well, there’s a good reason for that – he doesn’t exactly stick around for very long…
The end of Kingsman?
That’s right – it looks as though the end really is near for Kingsman. A brutal attack on the Kingsman HQ reduces the entire compound to rubble… and it looks as though Gambon can knock off early. It’s not just their main compound, either – following the missile attack on their HQ, it looks as though the Kingsman outfitters have also been reduced to ash. And the only survivors so far are Eggsy and Merlin.
Introducing the Statesmen – Agent Tequila
The hunt for Kingsman’s destroyer leads Eggsy and Merlin to a whiskey manufacturer in Kentucky called ‘Statesman’… and it turns out they’re not quite what they seem. In fact, the Statesmen are actually the US version of Kingsman itself. And Channing Tatum’s Agent Tequila is a bit like Eggsy, but with all the whiskey he can drink. “He used to be a rodeo clown,” says “He’s a good ol’ Southern boy who’s like a pig in shit about being a spy, and having access to as much whiskey as one can drink. He breaks all the rules and is a lot of fun.”
Introducing the Statesmen – Agent Whiskey
Agent Tequila isn’t the only Statesman we encounter… and it looks as though Agent Whiskey’s blend of all-American weapons is going to be quite something. After all, he packs a mean punch with dual pistols and a very special bullwhip. “We gave Whiskey classic Americana weapons,” explained Vaughn. And it looks as though he’ll also be playing a very important role when it comes to Eggsy. “I thought it was important to have an older influence on Eggsy. He tries to teach Eggsy a few things, but in a very different manner to Harry.”
Eggsy’s nemesis is back
He may have lost his head in the first movie, but Charlie Hesketh (Edward Holcroft) is back… and he’s been given quite the upgrade. Having survived the round of exploding heads, it seems he lost his arm in the process, and was given one hell of a replacement. “His implant exploded sideways in the first film, and he lost an arm as a result,” said Vaughn. “But he has an amazing new arm for doing horrible things to people.” Brutal.
Julianne Moore makes a weird villain
It’s no secret that Julianna Moore will play Poppy – the enigmatic villain in ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’. But what do we know about her? Well, not much, actually. “She’s America’s sweetheart gone wrong,” said Vaughn. What that means is anyone’s guess… but it looks as though she may be the public face of a presumably-sinister American corporation. And she’s almost certainly behind the Kingsman attack. But will Eggsy get to take her down?
Harry Hart returns… but he’s not the same
That’s right folks – Harry’s back. After his untimely ‘death’ in ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ it looks as though Harry Hart actually survived the ordeal… and he’s being brought back into the fold after the Kingsman attack. But he’s not exactly the same Harry we know and love. “He’s not the Harry we knew,” explained Vaughn, “He’s Harry Hart, but he ain’t Galahad… The only person who believes in him now is Eggsy. Nobody else does. It’s quite sweet.”
‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Julianne Moore and Elton John.
Matthew Vaughn directed the film based on a script he co-wrote with Jane Goldman.
‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ heads to cinemas on 29 September 2017.
