So, the “Battle of Winterfell” happened, the Night King was defeated but it wasn’t Jon Snow who delivered the fateful blow in the latest episode of Game of Thrones.
That privilege went to the one and only Arya Stark who finally put her years of training to good use by taking out the leader of the White Walkers.
Arya used the Valyrian steel dagger, which her brother Bran had given to her in season 7, to destroy the Night King, which in turn decimated his entire army of the undead, bringing winter to an end.
Maisie Williams discussed the ending with Entertainment Weekly saying how worried she was that people wouldn’t be happy that Arya, not Jon got bragging rights for the Night King’s defeat, and apparently her boyfriend was one of them.

“I immediately thought that everybody would hate it; that Arya doesn’t deserve it,” Williams explained. “The hardest thing is in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them.
“It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool,” she continued.

“And then I told my boyfriend and he was like, ‘Mmm, should be Jon though really, shouldn’t it?’”
Fans think Maisie should dump him for suggesting Arya didn’t deserve to kill the Night King.

Kit Harington was surprised but happy that his co-star got to stick it to the Night King in the end.
“I was surprised, I thought it was gonna be me!” Harington told EW. “But I like it. It gives Arya’s training a purpose to have an end goal. It’s much better how she does it the way she does it. I think it will frustrate some in the audience that Jon’s hunting the Night King and you’re expecting this epic fight and it never happens — that’s kind of Thrones.
“But it’s the right thing for the characters. There’s also something about it not being the person you expect. The young lady sticks it to the man.”

According to a behind-the-scenes video, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss knew they wanted Arya to kill the Night King for three years before it aired.
“She seemed like the best candidate provided we weren’t thinking about her in the moment,” they said.
Game of Thrones returns next Monday at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic and Now TV.
