Girls movie in the works, says Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham, creator of TV series ‘Girls,’ has confirmed plans to make a movie of the widely discussed HBO comedy drama – although it doesn’t sound like anyone’s in a hurry.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter to mark the show’s sixth and final season, Dunham confirmed, “we’re doing the movie. I’d just want to leave enough space so that we are finding them in a super different place than we left them.”
Being seemingly among the few people to have never seen a single episode of ‘Girls,’ this writer is completely unqualified to remark on the property’s suitability for the big screen. But of course, it would hardly be the first popular HBO series to make that transition, with the US network’s ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Entourage’ having spawned movies.
Dunham has worked in film before, breaking through with her 2010 independent feature ‘Tiny Furniture,’ which paved the way to her future success with ‘Girls’ which began in 2012.
The series has won significant acclaim and numerous awards, including several Emmy nominations in directing for Dunham, and two Golden Globes in 2013: Best TV Series Musical or Comedy, and Best Actress in a TV Comedy for Dunham.
Dunham’s success has also seen her become a vocal, often controversial figure in modern feminism.
‘Girls’ is also noted for launching Adam Driver, who has of course since gone on to huge mainstream success as Kylo Ren in the new ‘Star Wars’ movies.
