Golden Globes Results 2021: Sacha Baron Cohen takes aim at Donald Trump and 'all-white' HFPA

Sacha Baron Cohen used his acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes to take swipes at the "all-white Hollywood Foreign Press", Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani.

The British comedian won the awards for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) and Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which was released via Amazon just before last year's presidential election.

Accepting the first award, he made reference to the recent LA Times report suggesting that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which hands out the Golden Globes — did not have a single Black member.

In his second speech, Cohen quipped that Donald Trump was "contesting the result", adding: "He's claiming that a lot of dead people voted, which is a very rude thing to say about the HFPA."

Accepting his first award, Cohen made reference to Donald Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani.

He appeared in the movie in a controversial scene in which he appeared to put his hand down his trousers while in a hotel room with actor Maria Bakalova, who he believed to be a teenage journalist.

Cohen said: "I've got to say this movie couldn't have been possible without my co-star — a fresh new talent who came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius.

"I'm talking of course about Rudy Giuliani. Who could get more laughs out of one unzipping? Incredible.

"Our movie was just the beginning for him really. Rudy went on to star in a string of comedy films. Hits like Four Seasons Landscaping, Hair Dye Another Day and the courtroom drama A Very Public Fart."

Cohen added that his real co-star — Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) nominee Bakalova — was "incredible" and a "revelation and a sensation".

As he was interrupted by music urging him to wrap up, Cohen thanked his crew for their determination to get the movie made despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I want to thank my crew who were amazingly brave," he said. "They had the risk of getting arrested and the risk of getting COVID.

"They did that because we all believed so deeply in releasing this movie before the election to show the danger of lies, hate and conspiracies and the power of truth, empathy and democracy."

The 49-year-old added a special note of thanks to the person who served as his protection during some of the scariest stunts he pulled off during the shoot.

Cohen said: "I'm most thankful to my bodyguard, who stopped me getting shot twice. You know who you are and you know I'm not allowed to say your name, but thank you."

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was one of the big winners on the night, equalling Nomadland and Soul with two awards.

Cohen had an even better night thanks to his role in The Trial of the Chicago 7, which managed to win Best Screenplay although Cohen missed out on a Best Supporting Actor award to Daniel Kaluuya.

Despite the lack of diversity within the HFPA, the event proved to be a historic one thanks to Chloe Zhao's victory in the Best Director category — becoming the first woman of colour to win and the first woman since 1984.

On the TV side, it was Netflix's lavish royal drama The Crown which came out on top, winning four awards — including three acting gongs for members of its ensemble cast.
