Nintendo have also said that the game will have online capabilities meaning players will be able to compete against friends on the internet. This feature will not be available on the Xbox version.

A statement from Microsoft said: “Xbox is excited to bring GoldenEye 007 to Xbox Game Pass for the very first time – a faithful recreation of a much-loved and iconic title. While there are no plans to include online multiplayer as part of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox is focused on bringing this title to players in the way they fondly remember, including local multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to take to the couch in a battle of wits and skill.”

Longtime fans of the game are also excited to finally get to play it on current consoles with one tweeting: "Can't wait to start unlocking Xbox achievements in Goldeneye 007 this Friday! Just thinking about it makes me happy."

Another said: "Dang it. They're re-releasing GoldenEye on Xbox? Now I have to buy an Xbox."

Originally released in 1997 – two years after the film of the same name with Pierce Brosnan in his first appearance as James Bond – GoldenEye 007 went on to be acclaimed as one of the best shooting games of all time.

The game was exclusive to the Nintendo 64 and sold over 8 million copies, the third highest selling title on the classic console behind only Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64.

A remake with the same name was later released in 2010 but was not as successful as the original.
