Tom Cruise may be up for the role of the Green Lantern.

According to The Wrap, the 54-year-old megastar is at the top of DC’s shortlist for the role of Hal Jordan in their upcoming ‘Green Lantern Corps’ movie.

“Tom Cruise, Joel McHale, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Armie Hammer, and Jake Gyllenhaal are on the shortlist of actors DC Entertainment is considering pursuing for the role of Hal Jordan in ‘Green Lantern Corps’,” they revealed.

“The casting process is still in the very early stages, and there are no talks with any of the actors as of yet,” they revealed. And if you ask me, this sounds more like a wish list than an actual shortlist.

After all, Tom Cruise once mentioned in an interview that while he loves superhero movies, he’s not exactly convinced that he should appear in one.

But what about the rest of the names on that list?

If you ask me, they’re not exactly inspired choices… and most of them have been linked to other superhero movie projects in the past. In fact, at least two of them have been up for the role of Hal Jordan before.

Bradley Cooper was reportedly a strong contender to play Hal Jordan in the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ movie… and that’s apparently why DC are considering him for the role once again. He later told Howard Stern that he was ‘relieved’ it didn’t work out.

And then there’s Ryan Reynolds, who actually starred in the ‘Green Lantern’ film.

“DC is considering whether Reynolds, who played Jordan in the 2011 film ‘Green Lantern’, should return to the role, an insider told TheWrap. His superhero stock soared last year when he starred in ‘Deadpool’.”

I think the bigger question is – would he want to?

And I can’t help thinking the answer would be a resounding “hell no”.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Armie Hammer have also had their own brushes with superhero movies. Gyllenhaal almost played the role of Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man 2’ with Armie Hammer set to star as Batman in George Miller’s cancelled ‘Justice League’ project.

Essentially, most of the names on that ‘shortlist’ have been linked to superhero roles before, so it’s not exactly a huge stretch to see them linked to the ‘Green Lantern Corps’. Whether or not any of them would take the role is another matter entirely.

And on that front, perhaps it’s wishful thinking from Warner Bros.

‘Green Lantern Corps’ heads to cinemas on 24 July 2020.
