Hugh Grant actively seeks out negative reviews of his performances
Hugh Grant actively seeks out negative reviews of his movies online.
During a conversation with his Bridget Jones co-star Renée Zellweger for British Vogue magazine, the Notting Hill star admitted that he visits the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and makes a beeline for the "green splats", or negative opinions, about his films.
"I read every review on Rotten Tomatoes, skipping through looking for the green splats. Sometimes there's hardly any, but they're the ones I make a beeline for," he shared.
When Zellweger asked why he'd do that to himself, Grant joked that he was addicted to "self-flagellation" and she wondered whether he was on a quest for validation.
"No, because I skip the good ones," he confessed, to which she added, "To prove to yourself that you're right, that you did a terrible job."
The Four Weddings and a Funeral star acknowledged that his habit was "sick" and the Judy actress instructed him to "cut that out".
The Oscar-winning star noted that she never reads reviews, looks at Rotten Tomatoes, Googles herself or checks out her latest film's box office performance.
"Why would I do that? The movie's done. We did it," she insisted. "Why care? It's none of my business."
Grant may have struggled to find negative reviews for his most recent release, Heretic, because he earned critical acclaim for his performance as a creepy man who terrorises two Mormon missionaries. He has been nominated for a Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award and BAFTA for his work.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, in which he returns as Daniel Cleaver alongside Zellweger's titular character, will be released in U.K. cinemas on Valentine's Day.
