'Idiocracy' Returns for a Pre-Election 10th Anniversary Screening

In February, screenwriter Etan Cohen tweeted out a joke about how his 2006 film Idiocracy — directed and co-written by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-head, Office Space) — was coming true in the form of Donald Trump.

That social-media post helped spark renewed interest in the sci-fi comedy about a man (Luke Wilson) who travels forward in time to a dim-witted future America, to the point that there was even talk (now-shelved) of reviving its former pro wrestler/President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (Terry Crews) for a series of anti-Trump political ads. If the satire’s echoes in the 2016 presidential race weren’t enough to make you want to revisit the film, which almost everybody missed in 2006 — it played briefly in just 130 theaters and earned only $444,093, according to Box Office Mojo — you now have a second chance to see it with an audience on the big screen: To celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, it’ll be back in theaters for one night only, courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse.

On Oct. 4 at 6:45 p.m. (Pacific time), cast and crew members of Idiocracy will get together at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica for a special screening of the comedy, and their post-movie conversation will be live-streamed to Alamo Drafthouse and Art House Convergence locations nationwide.
