Internet Fooled By Rumours Of Lesbian Brokeback Mountain Remake Starring Emma Watson & Margot Robbie
A remake of Ang Lee’s ‘Brokeback Mountain’ starring Emma Watson and Margot Robbie is exactly the kind of film that would create a whirlwind of controversy and debate online.
Such a film does not exist, but a fake report speculating about that it does has fooled a large number of people online.
– Will Doctor Strange be in Thor: Ragnarok?
– Mel Brooks: Blazing Saddles could never be made today
– Insane cost of new LOTR box set
“Rumours” that a gender-swapped version of the 2005 Oscar contender was in the works had been started by The Portly Gazelle (via Hollywood.com), which name aside, is a thinly-veiled parody site dedicated solely to generating easy traffic.
The fake report stated that 'Harry Potter’ star Watson would fulfil the role played by Jake Gyllenhaal in the original, while Robbie take on the role originally played by the late Heath Ledger.
Users were asked to use the hashtag #Brokeback2 to discuss the movie, leading to many excited and a some baffled tweets.
“If its real i cant wait (sic),” said one user. Another said: “A lesbian remake of Brokeback Mountain with @MargotRobbie and @EmWatson? Oh my god yes.”
“I’M SO HAPPY FOR THIS,” said a particularly excited individual, with another eager Caps Lock user writing: “IS #BROKEBACK2 A JOKE OR ARE WE SERIOUSLY THIS BLESSED?”
It is a joke.
The original is widely regarded as one of the best films of recent years. It is also remembered for shockingly losing out on the Best Picture Oscar in 2006 - a prize that went to 'Crash’.
