It’s Morphin’ Time in new Power Rangers trailer

The ‘Power Rangers’ movie just got its first trailer.

And it looks a lot better than anyone was expecting.

It’s a familiar story – five teenagers stumble upon a crashed spaceship and in the process, become the Power Rangers. They get cool suits and some kick-ass moves as well as those Zords we’ve come to know and love. Not to mention, the all-powerful Megazord.

Here’s what we found:

First Look at Bryan Cranston as Zordon

Bryan Cranston may have voiced several ‘Power Rangers’ villains way back in the ‘90s, but now he’s getting his very own stint as Zordon – the alien mentor of the Power Rangers. But how does he end up as a weird hologram face? The original show revealed that Zordon was trapped in a time warp by the villainous Rita Repulsa… but whether or not this makes it into the upcoming movie remains to be seen.

Either way, Zordon’s look is very reminiscent of the original show – a disembodied, grey holographic face floating above the command centre controls. And Bryan Cranston seems to be doing a great job of voicing the iconic Power Rangers character.
The Putty Patrol looks far more formidable

Remember the Putty Patrol? Those spandex costumes and weird masks did very little to intimidate the Power Rangers… and only in vast numbers did they even pose so much as an irritation. But this time around, the Putty Patrol looks a lot stronger.

Okay, so we don’t know whether they’re the ‘Putty patrol’… but the Putties are certainly back, and they actually look rather frightening. At least, in terms of a kids movie. Gone are the humanoid looks, replaced by an almost organic rubble which looks far more horrific than their earlier counterparts.

And they look absolutely awesome.

This time around, it looks as though the Putties will actually pose a serious threat. And that’s just the start of it – there’s also a very different version of a classic Power Rangers villain.

Goldar is back… and he’s very impressive

‘Power Rangers’ regular Goldar has returned… but he’s no longer the winged bat-creature we know from the TV show. Instead, it looks as though Rita Repulsa’s powers are all about raising minions out of minerals and rock. And that’s exactly how the new Goldar is made.

Obviously, he looks very different. In fact, he’s more like a ‘Pacific Rim’ Kaiju than a cheesy ‘Power Rangers’ villain. He’s more than big – he’s colossal. But thankfully, the Rangers have an ace up their sleeves…

The new Zords look awesome

Blink and you’ll miss it. The new Zords aren’t in the trailer for very long. In fact, the very small glimpse we get is blurry, in the thick of the action and doesn’t give us much detail. But let’s face it – they look awesome.

What we’re getting so far is a much sleeker version of the original Zords. They retain their original colours, but the more mechanical (and less plastic) look really gives it a more real feel. And that’s clearly the look they’re going for. These Zords look weighty and are cearly heavy hitters.

Not to mention the awesome-looking Megazord.

I mean, wow. It’s more like something out of Michael bay’s ‘Transformers’ franchise than an old-school Megazord. It’s clearly a great direction to go in, and it suits the film’s style rather perfectly. Let’s just hope all the effects hold up like this.

‘Power Rangers’ stars Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lyn, Becky G and Naomi Scott alongside Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader and Elizabeth Banks.

Dean Israelite directed the film based on a script by Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Michele Mulroney, and Kieran Mulroney.

‘Power Rangers’ heads to cinemas on 24 March 2017.
