It’s official - James Gunn has the best job in the world.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, ‘Doctor Strange’ director Scott Derrickson revealed that James Gunn - the man behind ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ - has been very busy filming Stan Lee’s cameos.
“It’s a big deal for a 93-year-old man to go to a movie set and spend a day shooting,” he said. “James shot four cameos with Stan in one day.” Derrickson added that Gunn checked with the ‘Doctor Strange’ filmmaker to make sure he did the job right. “James was texting me the frame. Does this look right? Does this look good?”
Of course, Scott Derrickson is the man behind ‘Doctor Strange’ - Marvel’s latest superhero movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the iconic comic book hero. But it turns out that he didn’t get to meet the man behind the comics until very late in the day…
“I talked to him on the phone, and he grilled me pretty well,” Derrickson said. “By the end of the conversation, he was very happy.” But he never actually met the Marvel maestro until the movie’s premiere.
But back to those cameos…
Gunn later confirmed via Facebook that he was the director behind Stan Lee’s next four cameos… and offered up a hilarious story about how Stan welcomed new Spider-Man, Tom Holland, in the Marvel family.
“It was definitely one of the most fun times I’ve ever had on set,” he said. “There are few people in this world I love and admire more and have more fun with than Stan Lee. Even though he does love breaking my, and everyone else’s balls (I introduced him to Tom Holland for the first time and he said, “Everyone says you’re great! Personally, I don’t see it.”).”
“Although, to be honest, I think I only did THREE cameos - one was shot by someone else. And my third probably isn’t what you think it is…”
‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ heads to cinemas on 28 April 2017.
