The first details of Joaquin Phoenix’s next movie have been revealed and it sounds like the Joker star could find himself back in the Oscar race next year.

According to Deadline, Phoenix plays “an artist left to take care of his precocious young nephew as they forge an unexpected bond over a cross country trip” in the new film from 20th Century Women writer-director Mike Mills.

The untitled picture, tentatively referred to as C’mon C’mon on IMDb, recently wrapped production in New Orleans. According to Deadline, the project will touch on mental illness, as the boy’s father “struggles with bipolar disorder”. Mills was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2017 for 20th Century Women.

British child actor Woody Norman, who recently appeared as Aidan Turner on-screen son in Poldark and in The War of the Worlds, appears to be playing Phoenix’s nephew.

The low budget drama, produced and financed by A24, is heading to the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival (20-27 February) seeking international distributors, where it’s being touted as being an “in demand” title.

Fresh from winning his first ever Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards for Joker, Joaquin Phoenix is hot property, which will likely be reflected in the price the picture sells at in Berlin.

Oscar-nominated Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan, whose previous credits include The Favourite and Marriage Story, is the film’s Director of Photography.
