Jodie Comer 'surrendered' to the chaos of filming with babies on The End We Start From

Jodie Comer had to "learn to surrender" whilst filming The End We Start From, she tells Yahoo UK, as acting opposite a baby in every scene meant she had to expect the unexpected at all times.

The End We Start From premieres in UK cinemas on Friday, 19 January.

- You had a baby in every scene and at different stages as well. So I wonder, how did you find, both of you, working around that, having a child like in almost every scene and working with that?

JODIE COMER: It was beautiful.

MAHALIA BELO: Yeah, it was

JODIE COMER: It was tricky.

MAHALIA BELO: Yeah, it was tricky.

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

MAHALIA BELO: I mean, they brought a lot, and also, I think there's an atmosphere. The positives is that you bring a baby on, everyone goes quiet. And there's this sort of sense-- there's a purpose to everything, and everybody knows what they're doing. Like sound to camera, everybody's there with the baby, and then the baby does exactly what it wants. And that can be amazing, and also it can be really, really annoying as well.

JODIE COMER: You have to learn to surrender to it. You know? Like you really do have to learn to go with it, especially when you're shooting on film. And you're like the film is so valuable that you're like, OK, the baby's supposed to be laughing, but now he's screaming. Let's just run.

MAHALIA BELO: Yeah.

JODIE COMER: Just go with it.

MAHALIA BELO: There are some takes when the baby's crying, and you guys are responding. I would have loved to use it. Just didn't make sense in the story.

But there's something that's so organic that came out of it and involved improvisation because of the baby that's sort of beautiful and alive. We used some of it, obviously. You can feel it in the film I think.
