Joseph Gordon-Levitt teases Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F's "new dynamic"

It's been 30 years since the last movie, so it's not a surprise we should expect some changes in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.

While a lot of familiar elements are still there, namely Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley and regulars Rosewood and Taggart, the new movie freshens up proceedings by giving Axel a new sidekick.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Detective Bobby Abbott, who teams up with Axel when he needs help to protect his daughter Jane (Taylour Paige), who Abbott used to be in a relationship with.

But that's not the real issue for Axel – it's more about how Abbott won't fall for Axel's usual tricks.

"There's got to be something new. Taylour, who plays Eddie's daughter, and me, who's playing his new sidekick, that is sort of our job," Gordon-Levitt told Digital Spy.

"Where I wanted to come from was what about a new idea of the masculine action hero, who's perhaps a bit emotionally intelligent, how would that pair with Axel Foley? His whole superpower is he can lie to people, and he can make them believe them.

"He can play on your insecurities and manipulate you into doing what he needs to solve the case. My character, in our first scene, he sees right through it, and he's like, 'Oh yeah, that's not gonna work on me'.

"So to me, that's where a good sequel comes in. This thing you love this character to do, his new sidekick, it doesn't work on him, and they've got to figure out a new dynamic."

It's not only with the new characters that something is different for Axel in Beverly Hills Cop 4. Taggart has unretired and is now a Chief, while Rosewood is working as a private investigator and isn't a cop.

"I liked the changes. I liked the fact that Billy's older and not so naïve and is breaking something that's pretty big," Reinhold explained.

"[It's] a case that's pretty big and consequential that, I don't think is giving too much away to say, is destroying his department. So I felt like it was a good heroic role."

You'll be able to see how it all plays out when Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F lands on Netflix next week.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is released on Netflix on July 3.
