Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar Win Breaks Twitter Record

Leonardo DiCaprio has another reason to be pleased with his Oscar win…

According to Twitter, DiCaprio’s Academy Award for Best Actor has become the social network’s most tweeted minute from the Oscars, of all time.

“The Revenant star picking up a long-awaited award led to 440,000 tweets per minute,” explains The Hollywood Reporter, “smashing the previous mark set by Ellen Degeneres star-packed selfie from 2014.”

Of course, the aforementioned photo quickly went viral during the 2014 Oscars, when host Ellen Degeneres invited celebrity pals to take a quick selfie… and almost broke the internet when it was posted online.

But now DiCaprio’s win has managed to top even that.

“The moment Leonardo DiCaprio finally took the best actor prize was the most tweeted moment of an Oscar telecast ever according to data from Twitter,” they explained.

“DiCaprio’s win for his performance in The Revenant, after missing out on a golden statue on five previous occasions, set social media ablaze and led to 440,000 tweets per minute, beating out the previous record of 255,000 Tweets per minute set in 2014 when Oscar host Ellen Degeneres tweeted a star-studded selfie.”

And a quick look on Twitter shows that film fans still can’t stop talking about it.

After DiCaprio’s landmark Oscar win, the next most-tweeted moments of the 2016 Oscars were the surprise win of ‘Spotlight’ for Best Picture, followed by ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ when it picked up its sixth award of the night.

And according to Twitter, the social network has been ablaze with Oscar tweets.

“Twitter total audience: 3.9B views of #Oscars Tweets on & off Twitter,” they revealed. “Based on 24.2m Tweets (inc .pre & post show)”

Will anyone be able to top DiCaprio’s record? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But for now, congratulations to ‘The Revenant’ star for becoming social media dynamite.

And well done on the Oscar, too.
