Liza Minnelli says Judy Garland would have ‘laughed’ at Lady Gaga in A Star is Born remake

A Star Is Born is a story that has been told and retold many times – four times in the cinema, to be exact – and Liza Minnelli has spoken out about what her mother Judy Garland would’ve thought of the 2018 reincarnation.

Garland starred alongside James Mason in the second version of the doomed lovers’ story back in 1954. Minnelli reckons that her mother may have had slight reservations about watching Lady Gaga in the leading role, but would have eventually relented to its charms.

“She would have laughed,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “And then she would have gotten into it.”

The Cabaret star went on to say “I can hear her saying, ‘OK, let’s go!’” she added. “Great to the end!”

When asked if she was concerned about the upcoming Judy Garland biopic, Judy, Minnelli suggested that she had not been massively involved with the project.

"No, no I haven’t [seen anything],” she said, calling Renee Zellweger, who will play the titular role of Judy Garland, as “a wonderful” actor.

“I just hope they don’t do what they always do. That’s all I’ve got to say,” she said.

She recently took to Facebook to deny reports that she had met with the leading actor, and didn't approve of the movie.

Minnelli wrote: “I have never met nor spoken to Renée Zellweger... I don’t know how these stories get started, but I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way.”
