Logan: First look at Stephen Merchant as Caliban

Here’s our first look at Stephen Merchant in ‘Logan’.

Appearing in the upcoming ‘Wolverine’ sequel, it looks as though Stephen Merchant has gone through a bit of a transformation to become Caliban - the albino ‘X-Men’ mutant who is now looking after Professor X.

In fact, you might not even recognise that it’s him…

Appearing on Twitter, ‘Logan’ director James Mangold revealed Stephen Merchant’s new look… and it’s a rather impressive transformation.

“Taken w/ Leica S 007 Summicron 100mm, ISO 1600 1/250 ƒ2 – by JM” he said, detailing the technical aspects of the photograph.

It looks as though Stephen Merchant himself couldn’t resist dropping another picture, too… and this time, we get a very small glimpse of Caliban’s costume.

“How I spent my summer,” reads the caption.

But who is Caliban?

The instantly-recognisable mutant first appeared in the comic books in ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #148 back in 1981. Throughout his comic book appearances, he has been a member of the Morlocks, the X-Men, X-Force, X-Factor and even a Horseman of Apocalypse.

But perhaps most importantly, his ability allows him to track other mutants.

Will this power make an important appearance in ‘Logan’? Almost certainly - after all, from what we hear it’s unlikely that Professor X will be in any fit state to use the iconic Cerebro… and so Logan might be forced to call on Caliban’s powers if he needs to find other mutants.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Logan’ stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, with Patrick Stewart reprising the role of Professor X. Stephen Merchant joins as Caliban, alongside Boyd Holbrook, Sienna Novikov, Richard E. Grant and Eriq La Salle.

James Mangold directed the movie, based on a screenplay by Michael Green and David James Kelly.

‘Logan’ heads to cinemas on 2 March 2017.
