Mash-up trailer casts Harley Quinn and The Joker in Fifty Shades of Grey

Harley Quinn and The Joker, versus Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey: we could endlessly debate as to which is the unhealthiest representation of romance in contemporary pop culture.

Still, for better or worse, both fictional couples have been embraced by audiences – and, as such, it makes sense that someone recognised the parallels within the troubling relationships based on power plays, control and manipulation.

And so it is that Youtube user Nerdy Hero has created ‘Fifty Shades of Joker,’ a mash-up trailer cutting footage from ‘Suicide Squad’ to follow the same beats as the trailer for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’

Watch it below.

In the video description, Nerdy Hero tells us, “Crazy Never Looked So Bad! Honestly I’ve had this Idea for a Mashup for almost a year and glad to finally be able to make it and show you all!”

‘Suicide Squad’ proved to be one of the most divisive entries in a summer season that was already plenty divided; critics largely blasted it, but the film proved a commercial success, its worldwide takings of $722 million making it the ninth biggest box office hit of 2016 so far.

The film’s portrayal of The Joker and Harley Quinn as a twisted fairy tale romance may have touched the hearts of some viewers, but it left many critics aghast to see a romanticised representation of a relationship so fundamentally based on abuse.

Still, it is known that a great deal of the scenes which actors Jared Leto and Margot Robbie shot together – reportedly including a scene in which he hits her – did not make the final cut of ‘Suicide Squad.’

This, it is hoped, is something that may be fleshed out further (hopefully with greater balance) in the planned Harley Quinn spin-off movie, which Robbie will also produce.

No definite word on when we can expect that Harley Quinn movie yet – but ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ fans can catch up with that other unhealthy couple when ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ opens on 10 February 2017.
