There’s no getting away from it, Matt Smith hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to his film career. Lost River was hammered by critics, Pride & Prejudice and Zombies was dead on arrival, and the less said about Terminator Genysis the better.

But that could all be changing. Smith’s secured a role in JJ Abrams’ upcoming Skywalker saga closer Star Wars: Episode IX and, now, he’s got an unnamed role in Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, Morbius.

Jared Leto will be part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe as Morbius.

Jared Leto will play the titular vampire, former scientist Dr. Michael Morbius, who developed a cure for his debilitating blood disease, which accidentally turned him into an actual vampire, complete with an aversion to sunlight, the ability to fly, super strength, and fast-movement.

Seriously, this dude grew fangs, looked like a bat and developed a taste for blood – gaining the ability to turn people into vampires when he bit them. Bro, next time try a vitamin supplement.

There’s no news on who Smith’s playing, but if we were to jump into a TARDIS and come back… from the future, we’d guess that he’s playing Dr Connors, who’s a key part of the vamp’s origin story.

Connors was there the first time Morbius met Spider-Man, becoming obsessed with the scientist-turned-vampire after he realised that his bite could cure him from becoming a scientist-turned-lizard, after they both fought the spider-turned-scientist. Look, Spider-Man’s pretty sciencey, okay?

Will Spider-Man eventually fight Morbius?

We reckon Smith wouldn’t sign on for this thing in a supporting role, and if Sony are building to a Avengers style Sinister Six movie it makes sense to stick the Lizard in their first villain film since Venom. Add in the fact audiences are aware of the character, so it’s an extra hook, and we could see this happening.

But tune-in for when Morbius is eventually in cinemas (there’s no release information at the time of writing) when he’ll probably be playing some random dude. When that happens, don’t say we didn’t try!
