Venom sequel is officially happening
A sequel to Venom is officially in the works, according to reports from Variety.
Sony Pictures is kicking off production, with the first movie’s writer Kelly Marcel signed up to pen the sequel script and act as executive producer.
While Sony has declined to comment on the news, it was perhaps not unlikely that a second movie would be in the offing.
Though critics mostly panned the movie, it ended up doing scorching business both in the US and abroad.
In all, it brought in a staggering $855 million (around £670 million), becoming the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2018.
Though it had a riskily large $115 million budget for a new spin-off, it generally over-performed, making a huge $111 million opening in China alone, Sony’s biggest ever opening in the emerging market.
With details other than Marcel’s involvement thin on the ground, it will surely mean Tom Hardy will return as reporter Eddie Brock, who has a run-in with an alien symbiote, which then take over his body.
Woody Harrelson will likely be the villain too, as hinted at in the first movie’s post-credits scene, in which he’s introduced as permed serial killer Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, with Michelle Williams also set to reprise her role as Anne Weying.
However, it’s thought that director Reuben Fleischer won’t be returning, as he’ll be helming his long-awaited Zombieland sequel.
