The film industry may be full to bursting with movies based on well-established IP or from long-running franchises, but sometimes it's nice to take a step back from all the prequels, sequels and remakes to enjoy something new for a change.

Priscilla | 5 January

Sofia Coppola explores the romance between Elvis and Priscilla Presley in this independent drama, which is based on the latter's book about her life with the King of Rock 'n Roll. Starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as the couple over the course of their tumultuous love life, the film has gained much critical acclaim and awards buzz in the lead up to its release.

The Boys in the Boat | 12 January

George Clooney returns to the director's chair for this historical sports drama, which tells the unlikely true story of the rowing team at the University of Washington that defied the odds to go and compete at the 1936 Olympic games. Starring Callum Turner, Joel Edgerton and Hadley Robinson, the film proves a thrilling underdog biopic.

Poor Things | 12 January

Emma Stone has enthralled critics in early previews of Poor Things, an imaginative new take on Frankenstein that sees a young woman be brought back to life and discover the joys of life from a wholly new perspective. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the drama is gaining awards buzz at speed with Stone already the frontrunner for the award for Best Actress at the Oscars.

All of Us Strangers | 26 January

Another predicted Oscar contender is American Fiction, a drama starring Jeffrey Wright as English professor Thelonious "Monk" Ellison who spitefully writes an outrageous and stereotypical "Black" book only for it to become a huge bestseller. The film has already been nominated for two Golden Globes and critics have already heaped praise on Wright for his performance.

It Ends With Us | 9 February

Colleen Hoover has truly taken the world of BookTok by storm, and her beloved novel It Ends With Us is being brought to the silver screen in 2024. The onscreen adaptation stars Blake Lively as Lily Bloom, a woman who moves to Boston with the hopes of opening a flower shop and comes to meet neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni).

The Iron Claw | 9 February

Another standout sports drama of 2024 is The Iron Claw, which stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Lily James. The film follows the true story of the Von Erich family's rise in the world of professional wrestling and the struggles they faced outside of the ring.

Bob Marley: One Love | 14 February

Bob Marley is one of the greatest musicians of all time and his story is being told on the silver screen, with Kingsley Ben-Adir portraying the Jamaican reggae musician. The biopic will chart the musician's rise to fame and his life up until his death in 1981, and it will also star Lashana Lynch and James Norton.

Monster | 15 March

Hirokazu Kore-eda delivers another deeply moving and thought-provoking human drama in Monster, which explores the notions of sexual identity and love through its young protagonists Minato (Soya Kurokawa) and Hoshikawa (Hinata Hiiragi). The story, which won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes, is told from multiple perspectives, starting with Minato's mother Saori (Sakura Andō) who seeks out answers when her son starts to act strangely.

Mickey 17 | 29 March

Bong Joon-ho has been hard at work since sweeping awards season in 2020 with Parasite, and the result is a new sci-fi film: Mickey 17. Starring Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie, the film is based on Edward Ashton's book of the same name and follows a "disposable" employee on board a human expedition to the planet Niflheim.
