2023 has been a busy year at the movies, with several big name blockbusters driving audiences back into cinemas and providing a much needed boost to the film industry.

From biopics to iconic toys, Marvel to Disney, and even some indie hits, there was a lot to love about the new films that came out this year, but there were some that were some that were of more interest than others for people at home and Yahoo UK has researched them all.

The results, which were pulled from hundreds of millions of searches on Yahoo UK in the past 12 months, reveal that these are the ten movies viewers have been looking up the most.

10 | Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn's farewell to the Guardians of the Galaxy proved to be one of the most searched for movies of the year, and the only on from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that appeared to draw interest from UK viewers. The film saw Star Lord (Chris Pratt) and the Guardians try to save Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) after he is fatally injured by facing his creator — The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).

9 | The Little Mermaid

Disney has been busy remaking its classic animations for live-action, and The Little Mermaid launched in 2023 to much buzz, and criticism from a vocal minority, over Halle Baileys casting as Ariel. The film proved to be one of the better recreations of a Disney classic in recent years thanks to its fun musical numbers and striking performances.

8 | Cocaine Bear

It's one of the wildest true stories, where a cartel plane transporting cocaine crashed and was discovered by a bear, who wreaks havoc on the people who try to find the lost drugs in a bid to get a big pay day.

Tom Cruise has many successful franchises behind him, and Mission: Impossible welcomed a new chapter in the franchise with Dead Reckoning Part One which saw Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his crew face up against a dangerous new foe, an AI named The Entity.

6 | Five Nights at Freddy's

Perhaps a surprise entry, Five Nights at Freddy's may have gotten a poor critical response but viewers were enthralled by the horror film, so much so that it became one of the most searched for movies of the year. Based on the iconic game of the same name, the movie follows a security guard named Mike (Josh Hutcherson) who takes the night shift at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria and starts being terrorised by the beings that live there.

5 | Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Harrison Ford has bowed out of the Indiana Jones franchise with his fifth film as the archaeology professor, which sees Indy face some familiar enemies as he tries to help his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) when she becomes a target because of her quest to find the Dial of Destiny.

4 | John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick is back in the fourth movie of the now iconic action franchise, with Keanu Reeves' assassin once again fighting for his life as he tries to get revenge on the High Table for good by challenging the Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramon (Bill Skarsgård) to a duel.

3 | The Super Mario Bros. Movie

2 | Barbie

It was the movie of 2023 without question, Greta Gerwig's Barbie gained a phenomenal amount of buzz in the lead up to its release and created its own cultural phenomenon, Barbenheimer, because it was competing against Oppenheimer at the box office. The film followed Barbie (Margot Robbie) as she went into the real world to find the person playing with her doll and causing her to change in dramatic ways, with Ken (Ryan Gosling) joining along for the ride and having an epiphany of his own.

In a surprising turn of events it was Oppenheimer, not Barbie, that was most searched for by film fans, with Christopher Nolan's biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the Atomic Bomb leading to more search interest. The film stars Cillian Murphy in the role of Oppenheimer, with the actor portraying the scientist over several decades and giving a career-best performance.
