Brad Pitt took aim at Donald Trump’s impeachment trial as he was named Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood.

The win is the star’s first acting Oscar win from four nominations, including for Moneyball and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

His performance as stuntman Cliff Booth won over Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood), Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes), Al Pacino (The Irishman) and Joe Pesci (The Irishman).

In his acceptance speech, Pitt took a swipe at the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, stating that the 45 seconds he had been given to speak was “45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week”.

The President was acquitted on both counts of his impeachment trial this week, with former presidential candidate Mitt Romney the only Republican to vote guilty.

Pitt added: “I'm thinking maybe Quentin does a movie about it and in the end the adults do the right thing.”

Pitt went on to thank his family, his director Tarantino and his co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, telling the latter he would “ride on your coattails any day man, the view's fantastic”.

“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, ain't that the truth?” he concluded.

Pitt had previously won a BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for his Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood performance.

His speeches have been praised throughout the season, including in his absence at the BAFTAs, with Margot Robbie reading out his jokes about Brexit and Meghan Markle.

Although he had never previously won for acting, Pitt previously won an Oscar for his role as producer of the 2014 Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave.

The 92nd Academy Awards took place overnight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
