Oscars 2020: Eminem takes to the stage for surprise 'Lose Yourself' performance

Former Oscar winner Eminem emerged on to the Oscars stage at the Dolby Theatre for a surprise performance of his hit Lose Yourself.

The rapper won an Academy Award in 2003 for Best Original Song when Lose Yourself appeared in the hip-hop drama 8 Mile.

He did not perform the song at that ceremony, but got the chance to do so more than 15 years later at the 92nd Academy Awards, after Lin-Manuel Miranda introduced a tribute montage to music at the movies.

Variety reports his appearance was kept secret during rehearsals and that the 47-year-old had the option to cancel if the news leaked out into the media.

The star, who reportedly refused to perform the song in 2003 because he did not want to be censored, tweeted soon after his appearance with reference to the song’s lyrics.

While social media enjoyed Eminem’s performance, many noted the hugely varied reaction of the celebrities the broadcast chose to show while the star was on stage.

Billie Eilish, whose reaction to Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph was spotlighted earlier in the show, was pictured looking baffled, while The Irishman director Martin Scorsese simply wasn’t impressed.

It was pointed out that Eilish would likely not even have been walking when the song was first released.

Eminem’s performance came alongside the five tracks nominated for Best Original Song – all of which were sung live at the ceremony.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again from Rocketman emerged victorious, beating out songs from Frozen 2, Harriet, Toy Story 4 and Breakthrough.

The 92nd Academy Awards took place overnight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
