Netflix has shared the first look images from The Devil All The Time, the new star-studded drama from director Antonio Campos, which stars – among many others – Spider-Man’s Tom Holland and The Batman’s Robert Pattinson.

Based on the Donald Ray Pollock novel of the same name, the multi-generational film that explores PTSD stars Holland and Pattinson alongside Bill Skarsgård, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, Sebastian Stan, Haley Bennett, Mia Wasikowska, Eliza Scanlen, Harry Melling, and Pokey LaFarge.

It’s the fourth film from acclaimed director Campos, who previously made Afterschool, Simon Killer and Christine. He also directed the pilot episode of The Sinner, starring Jessica Biel, and an episode of Netflix’s The Punisher.

Pollock’s 2011 book weaves a number of different storylines together, with a range of characters including a disturbed veteran, a husband and wife serial killers, and a false preacher.

"It’s a multi-strand narrative set between the end of World War II and the beginning of America’s involvement in Vietnam in which a motley group of characters’ lives all intersect," the director explained to Entertainment Weekly.

Pattinson plays the preacher role, and it sounds like he’s crafted another unique performance for the film.

"Rob prepared a bunch of ideas and you don’t know what you’re going to get but it’s all interesting," Campos told EW.

"The character coming to life — I saw that in front of me when we were on set."

Campos says co-writing the screenplay with his brother Paulo was a labour of love.

"It was a hard book to adapt also because there was so much that we loved," says the director. "I’m a big fan of southern gothic and noir and this was a perfect marriage of the two. Sometimes you might be adapting a piece and you think like, Well, there is a seed of a good idea here and I’ll just throw everything away and start from scratch. In this case it was like, we love everything!"

Here’s the official synopsis: In Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighbouring backwoods, sinister characters — an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), twisted couple (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan) — converge around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) as he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family.

Spanning the time between World War II and the Vietnam war, director Antonio Campos’ THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME renders a seductive and horrific landscape that pits the just against the corrupted. Co-starring Bill Skarsgård, Mia Wasikowska, Harry Melling, Haley Bennett, and Pokey Lafarge, this suspenseful, finely-woven tale is adapted from Donald Ray Pollock's award-winning novel.

The Devil All The Time launches on Netflix in September, 2020.
