Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Character Details Revealed

Character details have been revealed for the new cast of Disney’s upcoming ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.

Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we’ve got our first look at the central characters who’ll make up the cast of Gareth Edwards’ ‘Rogue One’ that’s released at the end of the year.

Having known very little about our new heroes and villains, including British star Felicity Jones, we now know a bit more about her’s and eight other key characters’ backstories and personalities.

Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones)

Oscar-nominated Jones (for ‘The Theory of Everything’) plays the film’s lead rebel who has been fending for herself since the age of 15. “She’s got a checkered past,” says the film’s producer Kathleen Kennedy. She’s a streetsmart trouble-causer who’s actually been detained by the Rebellion and now has a chance to prove her worth and in turn shorten her sentence, which is a really interesting approach - much like John Boyega’s Finn in ‘The Force Awakens’ - whereby she’s an ambiguous, morally dubious character who’ll turn around as the film unfolds. Kennedy describes Jyn as a “Joan of Ark” type in the ‘Star Wars’ universe.

Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)

In contrast to Jones’ Jyn, Andor is a by-the-book Rebel Intelligence Officer who’s involved to straighten out the delinquent girl. He’s got a wealth of combat experience under his belt but will certainly be no pushover when it comes to thinking outside the box and using his brain.

Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen)

Interestingly, Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe is a blind warrior that isn’t an actual Jedi but lives his life by their rules. Kennedy describes him as a “warrior monk” and is devoted to the Jedi way-of-life. Director Edwards sets the tone of the film by placing it in more of a brutal reality than a fantasy per se: “This idea that magical beings are going to come and save us is going away, and it’s up to normal, everyday people to take a stand to stop evil from dominating the world.”

Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen)

This guy serves as a loyal protector to Chirrut, as a trigger-happy, well-armoured fighter. He doesn’t share the spiritual belief of his good friend, but respects his life choices.

Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed)

Bodhi Rook’s a hot-headed lead pilot of the Rebel Alliance. He tends to fly cargo, according to Kennedy, and is known to be volatile but very skilled… Sounds like he’s a bit of a mix between Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, without intending to put too much weight on the new character’s shoulders.

K-2SO (Alan Tudyk)

image

It wouldn’t be ‘Star Wars’ without a self sufficient robot, would it? K-2SO is the complete opposite to C-3PO, though. This intimidating robot’s a security droid with a personality more akin to Chewbacca than 3PO or the playfully likeable BB-8. “Kaytoo is a little bit like Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body, says Edwards.

Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen)

image

Galen is Jyn’s estranged father who has a wealth of knowledge that’d benefit both the Rebels and the Empire. We’ve no idea where he’s been or what he’s done since abandoning his daughter but no info’s been given here - this image (above) isn’t even from the movie; his attire is being kept under wraps for now, implying there’s something significant going on with him.

Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)

image

As this evil-looking member of the Empire seeks to impression his Emperor, Krennic’s intentions are simple: to destroy the Rebel forces. He’s billed as a determined and ruthless villain who will do anything to rise up the ranks, and closer to Darth Vader and his master.

Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker)

Gererra has a rich history where ‘The Clone Wars’ are concerned. He’s a rebel fighter that’s so extreme he leaves many of his allies questioning his methods. He and sister Steela have featured in the 2012′s ‘Clone Wars’ and has previously been trained by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He’s a mistrustful, tortured soul which will hopefully come to light in ‘Rogue One’. But if you can’t wait, you can read more about him here.

No doubt we’ll hear plenty more about the latest ‘Star Wars’ spin-off over the coming months and indeed later this week, according to EW.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ is in UK cinemas on 16 December, 2016.
