'Uncharted' and 'Venom' director Ruben Fleischer admits to feeling the pressure from the fans (exclusive)

Ruben Fleischer says the experience of making Venom prepared him for dealing with fan expectations when he signed on to direct video game adaptation Uncharted.

The 47-year-old took on the job of helming the movie version of the hit gaming franchise after a string of other directors dropped out, including Silver Linings Playbook filmmaker David O Russell and Bumblebee's Travis Knight.

"Whenever you're making a movie, I think there's an inherent pressure of just wanting to make something good that people will like," Fleischer told Yahoo Entertainment UK.

"But when there's a rabid fanbase who is very protective of the source material, it makes it all the more challenging and you feel that pressure.

"Luckily with Venom, I had the experience of adapting a character audiences were familiar with and loved, and brought him to the big screen.

"So I was aware of what that fanboy culture is and the allegiance and ownership they feel over the characters and the world. I just know that it has to be treated with respect and with the same love that they view their characters with."

Fleischer directed the 2017 Venom movie, which introduced Tom Hardy as journalist Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote with which he bonds.

The film earned $856m (£632m) worldwide, spawning a 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage — directed by Andy Serkis — which also proved successful at the box office.

Fleischer's take on Venom received a less than laudatory critical response, but the director said he was thrilled with the way audiences have responded and the continued evolution of the character.

He said: "I just love the dynamic between Eddie and Venom and I could watch it all day, so I hope they are able to make lots more of these movies just because it is so entertaining.

"It was originally very entertaining on the comic book page, and I'm so glad that people appreciate it on the big screen as well."

Uncharted, meanwhile, sees Fleischer collaborate with Spider-Man star Tom Holland, who leads the cast of the movie as Nathan Drake.

He's joined by Mark Wahlberg as roguish treasure hunter Sully, who recruits Drake to assist him in tracking down a cache of lost gold sought after by 16th century explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Fleischer said he was inspired by the action-adventure movies he grew up with when putting together the film's huge set pieces.

"I'm a child of the 80s, so I can't help but be informed by those films and the feeling you get watching them," said the filmmaker.

He added: "I said it long before I got involved with this movie, but Raiders is my all time favourite film, so it certainly inspired me to go down this path.

"A lot of those movies, as well as more contemporary ones like Mission: Impossible and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

"Just a big, crowd-pleasing action-adventure, whatever form that takes these days, is what I was trying to make."

As well as the Holland and Wahlberg double act, Uncharted also stars Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle and Sophia Ali.

The movie is based on the video game franchise published by Naughty Dog, which began in 2007 and has spanned four main series games, as well as several spin-offs and remasters.

The series has been an enormous global success, with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide.

Uncharted will finally arrive in UK cinemas from 11 February.
