Ryan Gosling explains his on-stage chuckling during Oscars flub

The picture of Ryan Gosling seemingly unable to hide his laughter at the Oscars – as the Best Picture gong was whipped from under the nose of his ‘La La Land’ crew – really summed the evening up.

Covering his mouth as the chaos ensued, he looked like how we all felt – confused, mildly horrified, but mostly amused.

Now he’s explained just what was going through his mind at the time.

“I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head,” Gosling said during a Q&A at the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas.

“And then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”

He added that the whole business was a little bit ‘surreal’.

“Truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won,” he said.

“It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognized.”

It’s not like ‘La La Land’ came home empty-handed anyway – it won Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Original Score for Justin Hurwitz, Best Original Song, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography.

So there’s that.
