The annual International Animated Film Association awards – or Annies – took place over the weekend, with Santa origin story Klaus cleaning up.

The Netflix movie, which finds Jason Schwartzman, J. K. Simmons, Rashida Jones and Joan Cusack among the voice cast, won a slew of awards, included the coveted Best Animated Feature.

Klaus beat the likes of big studio hitters Frozen II, Toy Story 4 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World to the main prize of the night.

It also won Best Character Animation, Best Character Design, Best Directing in a Feature Film for Sergio Pablos, Best Production Design, Best Storyboarding and Best Editorial.

Frozen II, now the second highest grossing animated movie of all time (though the first is the contentious 'live-action' remake of The Lion King), only ended up taking home two awards, one for effects and one for Josh Gad's performance as snowman Olaf.

Klaus will also be going up against Frozen for the animation Oscar too next month.

But it was a good night for Netflix, with the critically acclaimed I Lost My Body, which was distributed by Netflix at cinemas and also streamed on the platform, winning three more gongs, for Best Independent Animated Feature, writing and music.

Both Klaus and I Lost My Body will go up against Frozen II, Toy Story 4, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Missing Link for the Oscar on February 9.
