Spencer Matthews is to embark on the challenge of a lifetime this summer when he aims to run 30 marathons in 30 days.

The former 'Made in Chelsea' star will head to the Jordanian desert, where he will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the most consecutive marathons run on sand.

Speaking on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden about his 1,266km Great Desert Challenge, Spencer said: "So, I’m going to attempt to run 30 marathons in 30 days in the desert in the middle of summer, so end of July to end of August.

"A marathon every day, all of them on sand.

"So, my feet can’t leave sand - if I so much as touch a road or anything that is not sand, that marathon that day is void.

"They have to be consecutive, and yeah, it’s going to be quite the challenge.

"I’ve always been interesting in how far the human mind and body can go; I’ve always been inspired by certain other events that have been achieved by athletes and just people in general.

"I’ve taken part in some really tough races, and I wanted to push the boat out this time and try my best to make as much of a difference as possible."

Spencer's epic run will begin in the undulating Wadi Rum on the edge of the Arabian desert, and finish near the Dead Sea.

He is aiming to raise money for Global's Make Some Noise - the official charity of Global, the Media and Entertainment group - during the challenge, which will take place in temperatures up to 45 degrees.

He added: "I’m looking to use the challenge to make as big a difference as possible for charity.

"Global’s Make Some Noise is incredible and makes a massive difference to the lives of so many people by supporting causes across the UK, some of which I have had the pleasure of meeting, so I am honoured to be getting behind the phenomenal work that they do.

"Having their work and your support front of mind will keep me going."

To qualify for the Guinness World Record, Spencer will need to run the full distance - 1,266km - on sand.

He will not be able to cross roads, grass, rivers or other terrain during the 30 marathons, making the challenge a logistical, as well as physical and mental feat.

A dedicated adjudicator will be present during every marathon and will monitor Spencer’s progress in order for it to register as a successful Guinness World Record.
