Star Trek Beyond Postpones Upcoming TV Show

The new ‘Star Trek’ TV show won’t air until after ‘Star Trek Beyond’.

According to Trekcore, fans of the long-running sci-fi TV series will have to wait a little longer for the upcoming revival… at least six months after the release of ‘Star Trek Beyond’.

“When [CBS] split from Viacom ten years ago, January 1, 2006, one of the big sticking points, as you can imagine, was ‘Star Trek’,” said CBS President Les Moonves during an interview with the ‘Star Trek’ fan site.

“You know, we both wanted it. [Paramount] said ‘It’s a movie!’ and I said, ‘No, no, no, it’s a TV show’,” he explained. “Actually, we’re both right. So they kept the feature film rights, we kept the television rights; they have [Star Trek Beyond] coming out July 22.”

“Our deal with them is that we had to wait six months after their film is launched so there wouldn’t be a confusion in the marketplace,” he added.

The upcoming ‘Star Trek’ revival show is being produced by ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ co-writer, Alex Kurtzman… but it’s reported that the series won’t be connected to the upcoming movie.

“Paramount still has the option to produce a fourth movie if it chooses to, despite passing the mantle to the series,” says IGN. Given the popularity of the franchise, I can’t help thinking it won’t be long before we see the fourth film heading into development.

But what does this mean for the new TV series?

The currently untitled show is being created by ‘Star Trek’ alumni, Bryan Fuller. But that’s about the only detail we have so far when it comes to the project.

Although it’s unclear whether the project will fit into the new timeline or remain entirely separate from the reboot movies, we do know that it “will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise.”

So far, so vague. But will it boldly go where no-one has gone before?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ heads to cinemas on 22 July 2016.
