Star Trek: Section 31 is heading to Paramount+, with Everything Everywhere All At Once Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh reprising her fan-favourite character Emperor Phillipa Georgiou. This new film dives deep into a section of Star Trek lore that has long fascinated fans, following the clandestine exploits of a shady organisation that secretly pulls the strings in deep space.

Yeoh is familiar with the territory, having played two very different versions of the same character in 2016’s Star Trek: Discovery, the latter of whom eventually crosses paths with the mysterious Section 31. Originally planned as a stand-alone spin-off series, the project was elevated to fully-fledged feature film status in early 2023 — but what will Star Trek: Section 31 entail? Here’s everything you need to know.

Star Trek: Section 31 will be released on Paramount+ on 24 January, 2025.

The teaser trailer for Star Wars: Section 31 made its debut at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, giving fans a first glimpse at the return of Yeoh’s sinister Emperor Phillipa Georgiou. Watch it below:

Plot details of Star Trek: Section 31 are scarce but we do know that Georgiou will be at the centre of its story.

The film’s synopsis doesn’t help shed any more light on things either, stating simply that Georgiou “joins a secret division of Starfleet” and is “tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, [Georgiou] also must face the sins of her past.”

Who is Phillipa Georgiou? First introduced in Star Trek: Discovery, she was the Starfleet captain in charge of the U.S.S. Shenzhou before she was killed off and replaced by a doppelganger version of herself from a mirror universe. With the new title of Emperor Phillipa Georgiou, Yeoh continued to play this evil version of the same character for a further three series before talk of her own spin-off project ramped up.

A fan favourite, Emperor Georgiou eventually crossed paths with the secretive Section 31 throughout her adventures. This intelligence and defense spy organisation has been quietly operating behind the scenes for many different Star Trek stories and will take centre stage in Yeoh’s new movie.

Yeoh returns to the Star Trek universe to play Emperor Georgiou, marking the first time she’s inhabited the role since her final appearance on Star Trek: Discovery in 2020.

“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” said Yeoh in a statement. “Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams.

"We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

When production on the project began, we also learned that Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez and James Hiroyuki Liao had also joined the cast although details of their roles are still firmly under wraps.
