Star Wars 7’s Leia Isn’t A Jedi… But May Use The Force

Although Leia has become a General and not a Jedi in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, it seems she might still have a touch of the old Skywalker magic.

During an interview with IGN, ‘Star Wars 7’ director J.J. Abrams revealed that while Leia never became a Jedi, she might still be strong in The Force…

“It’s funny because, in talking about this – even with George Lucas – the question of at what age can someone learn The Force and become a Jedi [came up],” he said. “I would like to think that there really isn’t much of a ticking clock and it’s never too late.”

Of course, Princess Leia’s brother Luke managed to learn the ways of the Force later in life… and eventually went on to become the last living Jedi. But it looks as though Leia had more important things to do after the fall of the Empire.

“It was a great question and one that we talked about quite a bit, even with Carrie,” he added. “If there was another, why did she not take advantage of this natural Force strength that this character had? And one of the answers was that this was simply a choice that she made, that her decision to run the rebellion and ultimately this resistance and consider herself a General as opposed to a Jedi… it was simply a choice that she took. Not that there’s any regret that she could have and didn’t, but clearly we have seen (and we do again) that she’s still Force strong… and it’s something that I think is an intrinsic piece of [her] character.”

Of course, you don’t have to be a Jedi or a Sith to use The Force… and it seems this is an idea which will come into play during ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

After all, the villainous Kylo Ren is said to not actually be a Sith Lord himself.

But will ‘Star Wars 7’ see General Leia use the Force?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it’s likely to be far more subtle than a Force Choke or casting lightning from her fingertips.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
