Steve Guttenberg 'Delightfully Surprised' By Bill Clinton's Love Of Police Academy

Bill Clinton recently spoke at the Democrat National Convention about his enjoyment of the ‘Police Academy’ movies - and the star of the series is naturally touched.

The former US president was speaking in support of his wife Hillary Clinton on her nomination for the Democrat candidacy in the upcoming election when the films came up in an informal aside.

Clinton said that he and Mrs Clinton had “rarely disagreed on parenting, although she did believe that I had gone a little over the top when I took a couple of days off with Chelsea to watch all six 'Police Academy’ movies back to back.”

Yes, we’re also wondering if the former president has forgotten about 1994’s 'Police Academy 7: Mission To Moscow’ - but in his defence, this particular 'Police Academy’ marathon apparently took place during THAT stressful time in the late 1990s, so we can perhaps forgive his memory being a little hazy on the matter.

That Clinton was a 'Police Academy’ fan was news to most of us, but one person who was familiar with the story was 'Police Academy’ leading man Steve Guttenberg, who had heard it direct from the former president himself.

Guttenberg tells Deadline, “I actually saw him a few years ago… We were talking, and he was saying he was having a couple of days that were challenging.

“And I knew what it was about at the time, it was in the papers. And he told me ‘I gotta tell you, I sat down with Chelsea and I watched all six Police Academy movies.’

“It was such a delightful surprise to me, but I couldn’t help but think to myself, ‘you’ve got the most important job on the planet, and you’re taking time out to watch 'Police Academy?”

“But years later I’ve come to understand it’s very important when you’re driving at 100 miles an hour to pull over and refuel and oil up the gears.

“It really moved me to know that with such an important job, he still was mindful of how important that it. I think that’s a requisite quality in a great person.”

Guttenberg starred as Officer Mahoney in the original 1984 'Police Academy’ and reprised the role in the first few sequels, ending with 1987’s 'Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.’
