Toby Kebbell Insists There’s A Great, Darker Fantastic Four We’ll Never See

Last summer ‘Fantastic Four’ was released into cinemas, bombed, and as a result slightly tarnished those involved. But mostly its director Josh Trank.

The career of Toby Kebbell, who played Doctor Doom in the 2015 blockbuster, hasn’t been blighted too much, though, as he’s due to appear in the Hollywood productions of ‘Ben-Hur and ‘Kong: Skull Island’, while English audiences recently saw him in ‘Warcraft’.

While out promoting the video game adaptation, Toby Kebbell discussed the lamented ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot, defending Josh Trank and insisting that there is actually a very, very good version of the film out there. But admitted we’ll never get to see it.

“I tell you, the honest truth is [Trank] did cut a great film that you’ll never see,” Toby Kebbell told The Daily Beast. “That is a shame. A much darker version, and you’ll never see it.”

Even before ‘Fantastic Four’ was released there were huge rumblings of discontent. Not only did fans kick up a fuss that Michael B Jordan was cast as Johnny Storm, but it was rumoured that its production was rife with issues.

These were all but confirmed when, after seeing Trank’s version, 20th Century Fox ordered drastic reshoots, while the director’s alleged erratic behaviour on set led to huge disagreements with the studio. It’s also believed that Trank was subsequently kicked off a stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ film because of these problems, too.

Once in cinemas critics set upon ‘Fantastic Four’. They collectively mauled it so viciously that it was left with a paltry Rotten Tomatoes score of just 9%.

Since then a kangaroo court has been held in the public domain, where the film’s overly dark tone that differs greatly from the comics and numerous script changes have been blamed for its failings.

Obviously, we’ll never know the exact reasons why ‘Fantastic Four’ wilted. But these problems haven’t convinced Fox to halt the franchise, because it’s still believed that the studio have plans to either reboot or make a ‘Fantastic Four’ sequel. Just don’t expect Josh Trank to be anywhere near it.
