Could Maverick head back to the Danger Zone?

During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Tom Cruise revealed that he’s open to reprising the role of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in a ‘Top Gun’ sequel.

“It’s just got to be right,” he said. “That’s all. We’ve just gotta figure it out.”

It’s been thirty years since Tom Cruise climbed into the cockpit as Maverick. A talented F14-A Tomcat pilot, the US Naval Aviator is enlisted into the Top Gun school at NAS Miramar - a prestigious flight school where only the best can attend.

Of course, we all know the classic movie. He meets his rival, Iceman and eventually graduated the programme following the death of his wingman. And it seems that Tom Cruise was on board from the very beginning.

“I’m going to do this movie,” he recounts saying to his agent following the first meeting with ‘Top Gun; producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. “But don’t tell Jerry that I want to make this movie because I want to fly with the Blue Angels. You’ve got to work these things, you know.”

“I want to fly in the F-14, I’ve got to have at least three flights in the F-14, I want all the training and he’s such a brilliant producer that I was able to be in every single meeting while we were working and developing the scripts so I could learn from it.”

It sounds like an awesome experience. But do we really need another ‘Top Gun’ film?

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a potential sequel…

During an interview with Creative Screenwriting back in April, writer Julian Marks revealed that he was working on the ‘Top Gun 2’ script.

“When the opportunity came when they said they needed a new writer to start to figure out what this movie could be, I really just approached it from that place of, ‘Well, what would I not want it to be? What would it ruin for me?” he explained. “What would really, really make me angry if I saw it on screen?”

But have they come up with a film Tom Cruise would want to make?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But I get the feeling we haven’t seen the last of Maverick.
