Transformers: The Last Knight reveals first look at Hot Rod
‘Transformers 5’ has finally rolled out Hot Rod.
And he’s looking pretty cool in this first look image.
Although we’ve seen Hot Rod before in some pretty impressive concept art, Entertainment Weekly gives us our first look at the controversial Transformer as he appears in the movie.
And it looks as though Professor Viviane Wembly (played by Laura Haddock) isn’t exactly pleased to find that her father’s beat-up old 1963 Citroen DS is actually a robot-in-disguise.

According to Slashfilm, it looks as though Hot Rod will be playing a somewhat central role – acting as a guardian to the aforementioned Professor Wembly… without her even realising.
“The sequel sees Mark Wahlberg connecting with Anthony Hopkins, playing an astronomer named Sir Edmund Burton,” they explain. “With the help of Hot Rod, the astronomer has discovered a long-lost connection between Transformers and humans that stretches all the way back to the medieval times of King Arthur.”
And it’s got something to do with Wembly.
In the above image, the professor has just discovered that her father’s old car is actually an autoboot – Hot Rod – who has been secretly protecting and monitoring her over the years. At first, she’s understandably enraged… but it’s likely that she’ll come around to the idea of having a hulking great Transformer looking after her.
I mean, who wouldn’t?
And after finding out that her car is actually a sentient robot, it’s likely we’ll see them buddying up to take on the bad guys… or at least to work out how her blood holds a genetic secret which could either save or destroy the entire world.
Of course, Hot Rod won’t be staying as a 1963 Citroen DS for long. Living up to his name, he eventually takes the form of a Lamborghini Centenario, which we’ve already seen tearing it up in the official trailers. Obviously, this means he’ll be scanning another vehicle to take on its form at some point… probably before he reveals himself to Professor Wembly.
I mean, let’s face it – he was definitely due for an upgrade.
But will he get a much larger role in ‘Transformers 5’ than we realise?
It’s no secret that Hot Rod’s last big screen appearance was in the 1986 animated ‘The Tranformers: The Movie’. But it wasn’t without complications. During the epic conclusion, Optimus Prime is killed… and Hot Rod uses the Matrix of Leadership to become Rodimus Prime – the new leader of the Autobots.
Will this happen in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’?
I can’t help thinking Optimus Prime is safe for now. After all, he’s the face of the billion-dollar franchise, and when Hot Rod took over in 1986, it caused a huge amount backlash from the fans.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ stars Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Isabela Moner, Gemma Chan, Peter Cullen and Frank Weller.
Michael Bay directed the film based on a script by Art Meachum, Matt Holloway and Ken Nolan.
‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ heads to cinemas on 23 June 2017.
