“You must go before the fighting begins,” warns Caesar as his image slowly materialises on screen using flakes of snow to create the image of the iconic ape. “I’m sorry,” he adds. “War has begun.”
Following the events of the 2014 sci-fi flick ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, it sounds as though Caesar and his band of monkey brothers are sticking it to the man, quite literally. But as always, it’s with a heavy heart for the ape who began life with a human family.
“In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel,” reads the official synopsis.
“After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.”
Andy Serkis will star as the ape leader, Caesar with Judy Greer, Karin Konoval, Terry Notary and Max Lloyd-Jones. Woody Harrelson joins as the Colonel alongside Gabriel Chavarria and Chad Rook.
Matt Reeves returns to direct, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Mark Bomback.
‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ heads to cinemas on 14 July 2017.
