Who Is Star Wars 8 Actress Kelly Marie Tran?

It’s no secret that very few people knew who Daisy Ridley was before ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. In fact, this time last year, internet speculation was rife – after all, the most we’d seen of her was in a black and white ‘Star Wars 7’ cast photo.

She’s since shot to fame… but could the same happen to Kelly Marie Tran?

Along with today’s announcement that ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ is officially in production, the folks at Disney and Lucasfilm revealed a number of new names that would be heading to the ‘Star Wars’ universe.

Benicido Del Toro and Laura Dern were among them… but there’s one big question on everyone’s lips – who is Kelly Marie Tran?

It has all the hallmarks of Daisy Ridley’s rise to stardom – Kelly Marie Tran is certainly not a household name like many of her co-stars.

But while ‘Star Wars 8’ is her biggest role to date, she’s certainly worked for it.

Kelly Marie Tran seems to have first appeared in a series of shorts back in 2011 – ‘Untouchable’, ‘The Rising Cost of Cosmetics’ and ‘Impressions’. But most prominently, she’s also starred in a number of videos over at College Humour.

Most notably, this educational guide to women’s periods:

In fact, over the last few years Tran has appeared online in a number of hit web shows, including the hit series ‘Ladies Like Us’ which debuted in 2013 and spanned several episodes which were featured on both YouTube and Funny or Die.

A follow-up series launched in 2015 – ‘Ladies Like Us: The Rise of Neighbourhood Watch’.

Kelly Marie Tran also had a recurring role on NBC’s ‘About a Boy’ adaptation… and is set to appear in the upcoming ‘XOXO’ – an indie romantic comedy heading to Netflix later this year.

Unfortunately, details of her role in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ remain tightly under wraps. But we have to wonder – has she landed a more comedic role?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but a bit of comedy relief might be a good thing.

‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ heads to cinemas on 15 December 2017.
