There’s has been a love story that has weathered affairs, dead children and even war, but could season 5 finally break up Poldark’s Ross and Demelza for good?

Viewers will find out this Sunday, as the fifth and final series of the BBC drama arrives on our screens. Eleanor Tomlinson, who plays Demelza Poldark, told the Mirror, “There actually comes a moment in the series where Demelza has had enough and is thinking of leaving.’

One of the main characters may meet a sticky end too before the series out. Aidan Turner, who plays Ross, has joked that it would be him that wouldn’t make it to the final scene. And fans of the books can’t turn to Winston Graham’s epic saga for clues, because this is the first time screenwriter Debbie Horsfield won’t be relying on the novels for her storylines.

But as Ross reappears in Graham’s eighth novel (set eleven years later), we’re hopeful that Horsfield won’t deviate too much from the original text.

So what does lie in store for the stormy couple? Tomlinson went on to reveal, “Ross and Demelza experience problems because Ross becomes a spy and Demelza is excluded from that.

'He doesn’t tell her what is going on in order to protect her, but this drives them apart.’

And while series 5 will spell the end for the Sunday night ratings hit for now, Turner will still have some mementoes from the set to remind him of his Cornish adventures.

“I sent a text to Karen Thrussell, our executive producer, asking if I could possibly have the kitchen table and benches from Nampara as it is this beautiful, vintage French set. Luckily she said yes.”

“And obviously I am also taking the tricorn hat.”

Poldark series 5 starts this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
