Wonder Woman is no longer an honorary ambassador at the United Nations, following protests.

It was announced in October that the veteran DC Comics character was to be used as part of an ’empowerment campaign’ for women and girls in 2017.

But the appointment did not go down well.

A petition was launched online, addressed to the UN’s secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, questioning the character’s suitability, and garnering some 45,000 signatures.

“Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions,” the petition read.

Jeffrey Brez, a spokesperson for the UN, said that Wonder Woman’s stint as an honorary ambassador will end on Friday, but did not confirm why.

Brez did, however, say that such honorary ambassadorial appointments sometimes only last a short period, citing the time that the Angry Birds were used as ‘climate envoys’ for a single day in March this year.

“Wonder Woman stands for peace, justice and equality, and for 75 years she has been a motivating force for many and will continue to be long after the conclusion of her UN Honorary Ambassadorship,” said Courtney Simmons, from DC Entertainment.

The ‘Wonder Woman’ movie, starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, which appears to be playing the character as an ‘independent warrior woman with a feminist message’, is due out in June, 2017.
