General Zod: We looked like dorks

Performing in a CGI catsuit isn't quite the most dignified experience, says Man of Steel star Michael Shannon

Michael Shannon, who plays General Zod in the new Superman film, has said that wearing the CGI suits on the set of 'Man of Steel' made the actors 'look like dorks'.

Shannon's impressive armour in the film, as it turns out, has been added in post-production instead of the 'Boardwalk Empire' actor having to hulk it around while filming.

“I never wore the armour,” Shannon told Collider. “That is a CG outfit, I think I can say that without getting assassinated, yes.

“Honestly, the armour would be very heavy… they wanted me to have freedom of movement.

“So every time you see me in that metal suit just close your eyes and imagine me in an Arlequino outfit; green, red, blue, with the little tight around the midsection. Yeah, we all looked like a bunch of dorks.”

But other than the outfits, Shannon had nothing but reverence for the movie, particularly 'Dark Knight' writer David S. Goyer's script.

“I thought the whole script was just very sophisticated for the genre that it is,” he added.

“It was as sophisticated as scripts for other movies I’ve done that have been considered more highfalutin, or whatever. It has a lot of deep themes in it, and the way they deal with Kal-El’s journey is really fascinating.”

Meanwhile, director Zack Snyder has been hinting at sequels already.

“We didn't design the movie like Batman [as a trilogy] but I don't think anybody would say you design a Superman movie as a one-off,” he told Empire.

'Man of Steel' is due out on June 14.
