Michael Ansara - the first Klingon - passes

Actor who played Kang and Cochise dies at 91

Michael Ansara, the actor who played the first Klingon in the original series of 'Star Trek' has died at the age of 91.

Ansara, born in Syria in 1922, was originally famous for playing the character of Cochise opposite John Lupton in the 1950s TV series, 'Broken Arrow.'

In his long career he played a host of memorable film and television roles including as an Egyptian taskmaster in 'The Ten Commandments,' the 1956 epic with Charlton Heston; as Judas Iscariot in 'The Robe' (1953), with Richard Burton and Jean Simmons; and an Arabian prince who kidnaps an American movie star, played by Elvis Presley, in 'Harum Scarum' (1965).

He'll be best remembered, however, for playing Kang, the evil Klingon leader, in the original series of 'Star Trek' in 1968 and reprising the role in 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' and 'Star Trek: Voyager.' He was one of a handful of actors to play the same part on three different “Star Trek” series.

Ansara’s other many TV appearances also included 'The Untouchables,' 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' 'Perry Mason,' 'The Outer Limits,” “Lost in Space,' 'I Dream of Jeannie' (with his then wife, Barbara Eden) and 'Hawaii Five-0'. He also voiced the part of Mr. Freeze on the animated “Batman” series.

His former agent, Michael B. Druxman, announced the death on Friday, saying the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
