Tom Hiddleston’s awkward Golden Globes speech is just the start…

Let’s face it – our favourite actors aren’t always on the ball when it comes to accepting awards. Whether it’s the anticipation, the heightened emotions or just downing way too many margaritas, it’s never long before one of Hollywood’s finest makes a right pigs ear of their acceptance speech.

Here are some of the worst ever speeches from the Golden Globes.

Tom Hiddleston, Best Actor in a Limited Series, 2017

Yep, it makes the list. This year’s Golden Globes saw British actor Tom Hiddleston clinch an award for the hit TV series, ‘The Night Manager’. Obviously, it was well deserved… but his acceptance speech wasn’t exactly a humble one.

“I recently went to South Sudan, which is the youngest country in the world, in East Africa,” he explained. “With the United Nations Children’s Fund. I do a little bit of work with them to spread the word as fast as I can. It’s a terrible situation for children there. The Night Manager is about arms dealing, and there are far too many arms coming into South Sudan.”

But he just couldn’t leave it there.

“The idea that we could provide some relief and entertainment for the people who work for Unicef and Médecins Sans Frontières, and the World Food Program who are fixing the world in the places it is broken made me immensely proud,” he added. “I dedicate this to those out there who are doing their best.”

He may have meant well, but he’s since been repeatedly called out for being self-indulgent and just not very cool. Better luck next time, Tom.

Quentin Tarantino, Best Original Score, 2016

Nope, Quentin Tarantino did not write the score for ‘The Hateful Eight’, nor did he win Best Original Score at the 2016 Golden Globes. However, he did accept the award on behalf of his long-time collaborator, Ennio Morricone.

But his speech could have been a bit less about himself..

“Do you realise that Ennio Morricone… has never won an award for any one individual movie that he’s done?” he said. “He has in Italy, but not in America.”

Except, that’s not actually true. In fact, Morricone had already won TWO Golden Globes prior to this – once in 1987 for ‘The Mission’ and once in 2000 for ‘The Legend Of 1900’.

“I know that this is not America,” he continued, “it’s the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But, I have to say… that I directed the movie that Ennio Morricone at 87 years of age did a great original score for, and won the Golden Globe.”

Huge pat on the back there for the douchiest director in the room.

Christine Lahti, Best Actress in a TV Series Drama, 1998

Let’s just say Christine Lahti wasn’t off to the best start.

Michael J Fox and Laura San Giacomo had taken the stage to announce the award. They’d read the nominees, opened the envelope and read out the winner – Christine Lahti. But she was nowhere to be seen.

It turns out, Lahti was a little busy after heading to the ladies room just before the award announcement began. And it was all downhill from there.

“Oh my God, Oh my God!” she said as she clambered up on stage. “You know, I was in the bathroom, mom… I was just flushing the toilet and someone said you won and I thought they were joking, and I thought what a terrible joke! Oh my God!”

TMI, Christine. TMI.

Jacqueline Bisset, Best Supporting Actress in a TV Show, 2014

Everyone remembers when Jacqueline Bisset won a Golden Globe back in 2014… mostly because her speech was an absolute car crash. After beating the likes of Hayden Panettiere, Janet McTeer, Monica Potter and Sofia Vergara for the gong, she clambered on stage and delivered one of the worst awards speeches of all time.

Really, it was that bad. Highlights include:

“And to the people who have given me shit I say, like my mother… what did she say? She said ‘Go to hell, and don’t come back’.”

“’However, however, however, my mother was not entirely me,” she added. “I believe, if you want to look good, you’ve got to forgive everybody. You have to forgive everybody – it’s the best beauty treatment. Forgiveness for yourself, and for the others. I love my friends. I love my family, and you are so kind. Thank you so much.”

Sound advice, there. I think.

Natalie Portman, Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, 2011

Not quite as rambling as Jacqueline Bisset, but still a pretty weird speech.

After landing the Best Actress award for her role in ‘Black Swan’, a heavily-pregnant Natalie Portman took to the stage to let everyone know just how much her soon-to-be husband wants to sleep with her.

Yeah… not awkward at all.

“Thank you to Benjamin, who is helping me to continue this creation of creating more life,” she said about her partner. “Benjamin choreographed the film and also you might remember him in the movie as the guy when they ask, ‘Would you sleep with that girl?’ and he’s like, ‘Pffsh, No.’ He’s the best actor. It’s not true. He totally wants to sleep with me.”

Thankfully, the rest was pretty tame by comparison. But what a weird start, eh?
